A day after Eskom called off loadshedding, the power utility doubled back and reinstated Stage 2 blackouts on Sunday.
Stage 2 loadshedding returns on Sunday, 9 October 2022
In a statement, the national electricity supplier revealed it was forced to reverse its decision to suspend loadshedding after “a generating unit each at Kendal and Kusile power stations were taken offline for repairs.”
Consequently, Stage 2 rotational power outages will be implemented between 16:00 and 00:00 from Sunday until Wednesday, 12 October 2022.
“To the extent possible, Eskom will endeavour to limit loadshedding to night-time to have minimal impact on the economy and population,” the statement read.
This period of blackouts, the power utility explained further, will be used to replenish emergency reserves “during the night to bolster generation capacity.”
Whole Stage 2 loadshedding is expected to remain in place for the next three days, Eskom noted it would publish further updates where necessary, hinting at the possibility of higher stages of blackouts.
At the time this article was published, Eskom had 5 487MW of power out on planned maintenance, while another 14 061MW of capacity was out due to unplanned breakdowns.
