Bafana Bafana’s campaign at AFCON 2023 was marked by significant achievements that have reignited the passion for football across the nation.
Advancing to the semi-finals for the first time since 2000, the team showcased resilience, skill, and teamwork.
Their journey included a thrilling victory over Cape Verde in the quarter-finals, decided by a penalty shootout that marked a historical feat for goalkeeper Ronwen Williams, who was later named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament.
Ultimately, Bafana Bafana secured the bronze medal after a nail-biting shootout against DR Congo, cementing their place as one of the top teams in the continent.
The tournament also sparked discussions about the future of head coach Hugo Broos.
At 71, Broos hinted that his tenure with Bafana Bafana might be his last coaching role. Despite the speculation about his future, Broos remained focused on the achievements of the team, expressing belief in the team’s potential and reflecting on the journey with a sense of pride.
“I have said it before and I will say it again, I am very proud of my team and I am proud to be their coach. It was my goal to look into the future as well and think about who will be at the next AFCON or World Cup. We can compete with the best in the world and in Africa, and this team will continue building,” Broos said.
