Authorities are currently investigating a UGA student death after a woman was found deceased on campus.
Foul play suspected in UGA student death
The University of Georgia community is in mourning and heightened alert following the discovery of a female student’s body near Lake Herrick on campus, on Thursday.
This tragic event prompted the cancellation of classes and a warning for students and faculty to travel in groups.
The deceased, whose identity has not been released, was confirmed as a nursing student, though not enrolled at the University of Georgia.
The circumstances surrounding her death have led officials to suspect foul play.
Chief of Police Jeffrey Clark, in a statement to the media, outlined the timeline of the incident, noting that the police were alerted to her absence after she did not return from a jog, as expected by a friend.
Upon receiving the call, officers promptly initiated a search and found the student unconscious, with visible injuries, in a forested area behind Lake Herrick.
Despite immediate efforts to provide medical assistance, she was declared dead upon the arrival of emergency medical responders. The exact cause of her death has not been disclosed, with authorities withholding specific details as the murder investigation continues.
The University of Georgia Police Department, in cooperation with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, is actively investigating the incident.
They have issued a call for any information that could be related to the case, urging anyone with insights to come forward.
Due to the nature of the incident, the university cancelled classes until Monday, 26 February 2024.
“The past 24 hours have been a traumatic time for our University. Our student body is grieving the sudden death of one our students in Brumby Hall last night. And as we continue to mourn that tragic loss of life, today’s devastating news will uniquely test the resolve of our campus community, particularly our students,” a statement from the university read.
