The tremor, which occurred at a depth of about 61 km (38 miles), was felt in the early hours of Friday, 19 January 2024, around 06:40 local time.
The earthquake, centred about 5 km (3 miles) southeast of Cartago, caused moderate shaking in areas close to the epicentre and light shaking throughout parts of western and west-central Colombia.
Despite the magnitude of the quake, there have been no initial reports of significant damage or casualties.
The situation remains fluid, with authorities conducting comprehensive damage assessments, particularly in remote areas.
The possibility of light-to-moderate aftershocks in the coming days remains a concern.
Residents and local media captured the immediate aftermath on camera, showing scenes of startled people and minor disruptions in the affected areas.
Social media platforms buzzed with videos and images, as people shared their experiences and checked on loved ones.
Officials have advised the public to remain vigilant and prepared for potential aftershocks.
Residents in multistory buildings have been recommended to vacate these structures temporarily until their structural integrity is confirmed.
Additionally, disruptions to transportation and utility services, particularly near the earthquake’s epicentre, are possible.
The country has a history of seismic events, given its location in a geologically active region. According to earthquake statistics, Colombia has experienced an average of 153 earthquakes per year over the last decade, with magnitudes of four or above.
The region witnessed its strongest earthquake in recent years on 18 May 2016, with a magnitude of 6.9.
