Bafana Bafana are a whisker away from clinching top-spot in Group G of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, after their solid victory against Zimbabwe gave the national team a three-point lead ahead of Ghana.
Hugo Broos raises concerns after Zimbabwe victory
Still, coach Hugo Broos was far from impressed with the squad’s display, despite the fact that Bafana Bafana came away with a clean sheet.
“We played against opponents who were more aggressive than us, who won more duels than us, who had more movements in their team, and I really didn’t recognise my team.
“We were a little bit lucky and we could have lost points, but I am happy that we won the match. But, like I said earlier, I am not satisfied with the performance of the players tonight,” he said.
Will Bafana Bafana qualify for 2022 FIFA World Cup?
The Belgian stressed that there is still a mountain to climb before Bafana Bafana qualify for the 2022 FIFA World Cup. Sunday’s encounter with Ghana will be the truest test of South Africa’s mental strength.
Heading into this fixture, Bafana Bafana are table-toppers with 13 points, above Ghana who are tailing with 10 points. In order for South Africa to make into the last 10 of the FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, the team either has to beat the Black Stars or share the spoils.
For Ghana, not only is Sunday’s match a must-win, but they have to score at least three goals without a response from Bafana Bafana to qualify on goal-difference.
“They know that this performance against Zimbabwe was not good, but I am sure they will be more ready for the important match on Sunday away from home,” Broos said ahead of the all-important group stage finale.
In the event that South Africa tops the group, the nation will have one last set of fixtures to play in the third round of the qualifiers.
The third round will see the 10 group winners face off in home-and-away fixtures and the five teams that emerge victorious will be Africa’s representation in Qatar.
