The social media landscape was shaken early Thursday when X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, experienced a global outage, leaving its vast user base in a digital limbo.
UPDATE: Shortly after this article was published, X features slowly returned to normal. We still don;t know what caused the outage.
X (formerly Twitter) outage report: Here’s everything we know
Reports from Downdetector.com revealed that users worldwide were greeted with a static ‘Welcome to X’ message instead of their usual bustling timelines.
Further complications arose on X Pro, previously TweetDeck, where users faced “Waiting for posts” messages, indicating loading issues. This setback affected over 47 000 users in the US, adding to the frustration and raising questions about the platform’s stability.
The backdrop of these outages is a series of tumultuous events following Elon Musk‘s takeover in October 2022.
The $44 billion acquisition led to significant changes, including a drastic reduction in the platform’s workforce, particularly in critical departments.
This move was seen by many as the beginning of a downward spiral for X, exposing it to increased vulnerabilities and reliability challenges.
Under Musk’s leadership, X has faced increased scrutiny for its handling of misinformation, hate speech, and fake accounts.
Reports indicate a rise in the sharing of harmful content on the platform, underscoring the consequences of reduced oversight and moderation capabilities.
X has also suffered from a loss of top-billing advertisers due to Musk’s supposed disregard for antisemitism on the platform, as well as a reduction in trust.

Regardless of the red flags, X still enjoys high daily user engagement.
The X outage was still ongoing when this article was published, and we’d update this article with a word from Musk but, of course, his timeline, much like everyone else’s, is missing.
