The world’s most used messaging app, WhatsApp, was down in South Africa and elsewhere in the world on Tuesday. Here’s what we know at this time.
Why is WhatsApp down?
On Tuesday morning, users of the Meta-owned application took to social media to vent their frustrations after experiencing issues with certain features.
As reported by Business Insider, not only were users unable to send messages to contacts and groups but loading the web version of WhatsApp pulled a connection error.
Businesses that rely on WhatsApp to manage workspaces and customers were left in the dark with no alternative means, and at the time this article was published, Meta had not released a statement with more information on the cause of the outage.
According to Down Detector, users from Africa, Europe and Asia reported problems with WhatsApp on Tuesday.
Based on the platform’s outage tracking chart, the first reports of problems with the messaging app occurred shortly before 09:00. Around 73% of reports indicated issues with sending messages, while 23% complained about general app access problems.
WhatsApp was still down at the time this article was published.
This is a developing story.
