UPDATE: Shortly after this article was updated, a test prompt on ChatGPT returned a successful response. While it appears normal operations have returned on the platform, users are advised to expect issues.

An attempt to load the platform via a web browser loaded an error with the following message for logged-in users:
“We’re experiencing exceptionally high demand. Please hang tight as we work on scaling our systems.”
Users not signed into ChatGPT were served a landing page noting that the language model-based chatbot was “at capacity right now,” and, as a sweet touch for the inconvenience, random prompts such as, “write a poem about the status of ChatGPT,” popped up below an anchor text encouraging users to trade in their email addresses to “get notified when ChatGPT is back.”
When this article was published, OpenAI had not issued a public statement with details about the outage.
However, according to tracking from Down Detector, users first alerted the platform about ChatGPT being down at approximately 14:00 on Wednesday, 13 September 2023.
It seems, for the most part, users experienced issues with not only accessing the platform but also enjoying its prompt-based features.
