The tech community is mourning the loss of Bob Lee, the founder of Cash App and former Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Square, who was fatally stabbed in San Francisco in the early hours of Tuesday, 4 April 2023.

Lee, who was 43 years old, was also serving as the chief product officer of MobileCoin at the time of his death.
According to NBC Bay Area, sources confirmed Lee’s identity as the victim of the stabbing.
From what we understand, San Francisco police responded to a report of a stabbing at around 02:35 PST (11:35 in CAT) on Tuesday and found a 43-year-old man with apparent stab wounds.
The victim was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries and later died.
As of early Wednesday, no arrests have been made, and the incident is being investigated by the department’s homicide detail.
Lee remembered as a ‘force of nature’ in next-gen tech
Lee was a highly respected figure in the tech industry, known for his contributions to the development of Cash App and Android.
Joshua Goldbard, the CEO of MobileCoin, paid tribute to Lee, calling him a “force of nature” who helped to bring Cash App and Android into the world.
Goldbard also described MobileCoin as Lee’s dream, a “privacy-protecting wallet for the 21st century.”
Lee’s death has been met with an outpouring of grief and condolences from the tech community.
Jake Shields, a former MMA fighter, remembered Lee as a “loyal friend” and expressed shock at his death on social media.
Twitter chief Elon Musk also expressed his condolences, saying he was “very sorry” to learn of Lee’s passing.
The circumstances surrounding Lee’s death remain unclear, and the investigation is ongoing.
