South African R&B artist and songwriter, Zandie Khumalo, made an impassioned plea to President Cyril Ramaphosa, urging him to employ his executive authority to prioritise the progression of the Senzo Meyiwa murder trial and ensure its expeditious resolution.
Zandie Khumalo pens letter to Ramaphosa
As the sister of Kelly Khumalo, Meyiwa’s former girlfriend, Zandie took to her social media platforms to share a letter addressed to President Ramaphosa and the chief justice, expressing her concerns and hopes for the trial’s advancement.
The plea comes on the heels of the recent suspension of Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela by the president due to perceived delays in delivering a verdict.
Subsequently, Judge Ratha Mokgoatlheng has been appointed to take over the case.
In her heartfelt letter, Zandie passionately implored President Ramaphosa to accelerate the ongoing Senzo Meyiwa trial.
“I would like to request a serious prioritisation of the Senzo Meyiwa case moving forward,” she wrote.
Recognising the inherent time constraints and procedural complexities of court proceedings, she called for the establishment of a dedicated court and legal team solely responsible for the case.
“My biggest wish would be to try and put a bit of pace to the proceedings of this case. I would like for the sake of the families who haven’t found closure after so long to request that one court is earmarked specifically for this case, a specific law team is also appointed to deal with nothing else but this case and this case is in court from Monday to Friday up until it is concluded and a verdict has been given,” Khumalo demanded.
Considering the significant public interest surrounding the case, Zandie proposed measures to ensure a swifter pace, acknowledging the emotional toll on all involved.
She highlighted the necessity of achieving justice for Senzo Meyiwa and the importance of closure for the families affected by the tragic incident.
As a witness and a resident present during the incident, Zandie shared her personal desire for justice and closure.
Although she testified in court that she could not identify the accused who allegedly shot the soccer star, she expressed her commitment to supporting law enforcement authorities in their efforts to solve the case.
