In a tweet that’s since gone viral, actress Pearl Thusi admitted that her participation in political campaigns had very little to do with her allegiance.
Pearl Thusi says she did it for the bag
Queen Sono was not rich and famous her whole life. It took a lot of hardwork, dedication and sometimes, placing her political beliefs in the backseat for a cheque, to get to the A-list status she’s assumed in her career.
The last thing Thusi expected when she asked her tweeps, “what does the South African government do well?” was a user hauling up an old photo of the actress in ANC campaign regalia.
The Twitter user cynically replied to the actress, claiming that one of the things the government does well is use celebrity to lure votes.
Unexpectedly, Thusi admitted that she had sold her likeness to a number of political parties in a bid to trade votes she drew to the respective organisations, in exchange for cash.
“I really needed that rent money. Hence I said actively promoting any party. But if I knew then what I know now… regrettably, I also did a DA gig that year,” she tweeted.
In an attempt to justify her past decisions, Thusi stressed that she tried by all means to ‘limit’ the exposure she sold to political parties.
In the old picture of her wearing an ANC t-shirt, Thusi claims her arms were folded to block off the party’s logo. However, she still wore the regalia and paraded with political figures at numerous events which, in essence, defeats the purpose of her ‘silent boycott’.
Here is the tweet that has since gone viral:
Notice what I did with my arms. That wasn’t an accident. That wasn’t an accident. I really needed that rent money. Hence I said actively promoting any party. But if I knew then what I know now… regrettably, I also did a DA gig that year. https://t.co/DRkYp0it95
