Nicki Minaj and Latto thrilled fans with a keyboard catfight caused by the same old Grammys politics.
What caused the Nicki Minaj, Latto feud?
Queen Onika took to social media to air her frustrations with the Recording Academy after her top-charting single, Super Freaky Girl, was moved out of every rap category and placed in contention with Pop songs.
Minaj appeared bemused when she explained the situation on her Instagram Live.
“They stay moving the goalposts when it comes to me. Why is the goalpost only ever moved when it’s Nicki?” she said.
For reasons not yet provided by the Grammys, Nicki’s Super Freaky Girl, which peaked at No.1 on Billboard‘s Hot 100 chart, and topped multiple rap rankings, was reportedly turned down by the Recording Academy’s rap committee, per The Hollywood Reporter.
Things took an awry turn when Minaj, venting her frustration with the snub, took to Twitter to suggest that if Super Freaky Girl can’t compete in rap categories, the same should be the case with Latto’s Big Energy.
Except, Latto didn’t take this tweet as a ‘call to arms’ from a fellow female rapper.
In fact, the Big Energy rapper felt slighted that her biggest inspiration, whom, it turns out, she’s been at odds with in private messages over music business politics, used her as a sacrificial lamb in a fight with the Recording Academy.
Minaj’s call for support must have been lost in ongoing tensions between the two rappers since Latto, in a tweet, revealed she’d approached Queen Onika via text about subtweets weeks before Thursday’s ‘twar’.
“I’ve ignored countless subtweets since March [2022] and instead addressed u (sp) in the dm (sp). You’re asking why I didn’t speak up in ur (sp) defense… it’s the same answer I gave u when u asked why I didn’t congratulate you. Ur literally older than my mom tryna be a bully [Nicki Minaj],” she wrote.
From this point, things quickly deteriorated into chaos, with both sides throwing shade at the other. Here are some of the tweets Nicki and Latto posted:
