Limpopo singer Makhadzi‘s new management is seeking legal counsel to consider avenues available to the singer in her attempt to wedge herself out of what, colloquially, is called a ‘slave contract’.
Makhadzi new management turns to lawyers
Last week, Makhadzi sent social media into an uproar when, in a series of heated tweets, the Kokovha singer aired her grievances with the label for blocking her attempts to exit her contract, the terms of which, in her opinion, she’s honoured.
“I signed with open mic only for three years. In this three years I dropped 4 albums . I have never recieved any cent of my sales . Some of my album reached platinum some gold . And a lot of hits songs that reached platinum and Gold . But I continue to work without complaining,” she wrote in one tweet.
In a series of posts, the singer accused former Open Mic MD Nkateko Maluleke of threatening her when she demanded her contract and claimed she had never been paid for sales of the four albums she released with the company.
Leaked audio clips of a conversation between Makhadzi and Maluleke allegedly discussing her contract have also appeared online.
Maluleke has since remained mum on the leaked audio, only letting it slip that Open Mic would release a statement “in due time”.
Sources close to Open Mic reveal shocking clause in Makhadzi’s contract
A source from the label, however, told ZiMoja that a clause supposedly exists in Makhadzi’s contract stating that she will continue to work for Open Mic unless they feel dissatisfied with her performance.
Makhadzi’s new management has now said they will seek legal advice, having obtained the contract with the clause that states the singer is still affiliated with the label.
“This is becoming a legal matter, so we are going to meet with our lawyers to give us the way forward. We received the contract which she signed, so we are presenting it to our lawyers so we can be advised what to do next,” the team told Tshisa Live.
Open Mic has yet to surface with a formal statement addressing Makhadzi’s claims, who picked up Best Female at the 2023 Metro FM Awards this past weekend.
As things stand, the label is clear that the singer is still under contract since she allegedly signed an “auto-renewable” agreement.
