The 2022 South African Music Awards (SAMAs) are racking up a bad rep over what performers such as Makhadzi believe was a below-par production.
Makhadzi opens up about 2022 SAMA Awards performance
The Limpopo queen took to social media on Monday morning to clear the air around negative feedback she received over her performance. It was pretty evident to the naked and uninformed eye that something about the songstress’ choreography was off.
The same can be said about her sonics.
In a series of since-deleted tweets, Makhadzi claims she was only allowed five minutes to rehearse her routine. More shockingly, according to the Ghanama star, she resorted to using her cellphone to iron out her choreography before the show.
“I asked to rehearse with the camera guys so they can read my moves no one listened to me,” she said.
Moreover, Makhadzi claims she was promised pyrotechnics for her performance, but she found out on stage that this, too, was another inconvenience courtesy of the 2022 SAMA Awards.
“I don’t want [SAMA Awards] anymore. I want to do my music for YouTube, so my fans can buy data and support me without any favour,” Mankhadzi added.
The SAMA Awards had not issued a public statement in response to the backlash at the time this article was published.
Makhadzi, for the most part, echoed the sentiments of DJ Maphorisa, who, in a tweet, also blasted the awards, vowing to never bat an eyelash toward the occasion in the future.
Both Makhadzi and DJ Maphorisa walked away with a win each on the night. However, while Makhadzi’s complaints were closely linked to production issues, Maphorisa felt shortchanged.
“[You] can’t cheat the numbers. [And] f*** the [SAMAs] forever. [It] doesn’t even bring food on the table,” the Amapiano veteran tweeted.
