South African rapper K.O broke his silence on his snub at the 2023 Metro FM Awards this past weekend.
K.O reflects on trophiless night at 2023 Metro FM Awards
Despite being nominated for seven awards, K.O failed to win a single one, raising many eyebrows. His longtime collaborator, the late Kiernan ‘AKA‘ Forbes, on the other hand, accomplished a near-perfect posthumous sweep, winning five of the six categories he was nominated for.
However, speaking to Zimoja, the SR3 rapper revealed he is not invested in local music awards and is instead focused on elevating his musical career to the global stage.
K.O stated that while he does not take the nominations and awards lightly, he has never held a central focus on them as a symbol of success.
He added that awards are a seesaw for any artist, and it’s up to the artist to maintain a level of sanity and focus on the things that matter. For K.O, the fact that he was nominated seven times is already a blessing in its own right.
When asked about why his hit single “SETE” didn’t win Song of the Year, K.O stated that he doesn’t understand the voting process.
He acknowledged that there’s a voting aspect to the awards, but if it’s based on that, then it becomes tricky how everything plays out. He doesn’t invest too much in trying to campaign for awards but instead focuses on making music that people will love.
“If people voted more for others than us, then that’s final. There’s nothing we can do about that. Awards or not. I am already a made man, legendary and I am going to continue performing my purpose with or without the trophies,” he said.
The rapper also acknowledged that he is delighted for everyone who won at the Metro FM Music Awards and that he is blessed and able to feed his family through music. Ultimately, K.O is focused on performing his purpose with or without the trophies.
