Gauteng residents are bracing for a scorching week ahead as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) extends a heatwave warning to the eastern and southern parts of the province.
Heatwave expected to scorch these parts of Gauteng
Pretorians are particularly set to experience blistering temperatures peaking around 37°C.
According to SAWS spokesperson Lehlohonolo Thobajana, the hot and dry spell, which is part of a broader condition affecting the Highveld, is projected to linger through to the weekend.
Amid these extreme weather conditions, residents are further strained by water supply challenges posed by Rand Water and major metros in the area.
As Gauteng endures this heatwave, staying cool and safe becomes imperative.

Below are five recommendations to navigate through the searing temperatures:
1. Hydrate Regularly
The human body loses water more rapidly in hot conditions due to sweating, a natural mechanism to cool down the body.
- Drink water: Ensuring a steady intake of water throughout the day can help compensate for the water loss.
- Avoid diuretics: Alcohol and caffeine are diuretics that can accelerate dehydration, hence it’s advisable to minimise their consumption.
2. Avoid Sun Exposure
Direct exposure to sun’s rays can cause sunburn and prolonged exposure can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
- Stay indoors: It’s prudent to stay indoors, especially between 11:00 and 15:00.
- Use sunscreen: Applying sunscreen with a high SPF can provide a shield against harmful UV rays.
3. Cooling Showers
Lowering the skin temperature through cooling showers or baths can provide immediate relief and aid in reducing the overall body temperature.
- Cold showers or baths: They are effective in providing a quick cooldown.
- Damp cloth: Placing a damp cloth on the forehead or back of the neck can offer temporary relief.
4. Wear Appropriate Clothing
Light-coloured clothing reflects, rather than absorbs, the sun’s rays, while loose-fitting clothes allow the body to cool through the evaporation of sweat.
- Light-coloured clothing: Opting for these can aid in keeping the body cool.
- Protective gear: Utilising a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses can shield you from direct sun exposure.
5. Utilise Fans or Air-Conditioning
Air movement from fans can expedite the evaporation of sweat, a natural cooling mechanism, while air conditioning helps maintain a comfortable indoor temperature.
- Indoor cooling: Employing fans or air-conditioning units can significantly enhance comfort.
- Maintenance: Regular maintenance ensures the effective operation of these cooling devices.
