Durban experienced a catastrophic deluge on Tuesday afternoon, resulting in widespread floods that inflicted damage to numerous homes and vehicles.
Rescuers work overtime to save lives
The torrential downpour prompted a swift response from emergency services, as rescue teams remained on high alert to assist affected residents.
Reacting to an alarming surge of distress calls, members of Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) swiftly deployed to approximately 40 locations where flooding was reported.
In one instance, a family of four was rescued from their residence in Woodmanor Place, Trenance Manor, KZN, after a nearby stream swelled and breached its banks.
RUSA’s dedicated officers worked diligently to ensure the safety of those trapped by the rising waters.
In Ottawa, KZN, a 90-year-old woman slipped and fell in her flooded home on Munn Road, prompting her daughter to urgently seek assistance. Recognizing the severity of the situation, RUSA reacted promptly, successfully rescuing both individuals from their perilous situation.
Durban floods claim a life
Meanwhile, the heavy rainfall left several motorists stranded between Phoenix and Verulam, KZN, as their vehicles succumbed to the rising waters.
The resultant flooded roads caused significant traffic disruptions, adding to the chaos brought about by the relentless downpour.
Tragically, an individual in Zwelisha, KZN is presumed to have lost their lives while attempting to traverse a flooded river. Due to the hazardous weather conditions, search efforts for the victim’s body were suspended, further underscoring the danger posed by the flooding.

Alongside CERT KZN, the IPSS Search and Rescue division promptly mobilised its members and rescue equipment to aid those affected by the localised flooding in Durban and its surrounding areas.
The joint efforts of these dedicated teams aim to provide much-needed support to affected communities grappling with the aftermath of the devastating floods.
Authorities and emergency services are issuing a stern warning, urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid venturing near rivers, low-lying bridges, and water-logged roads.
This advisory serves as a critical reminder of the potential hazards presented by the ongoing inclement weather.
