Recently wedded Gqom legend Babes Wodumo has been dragged into quarrels about who’s better between her and fellow musician and dancer Kamo Mphela.
Fans pit Kamo Mphela against Babes Wodumo
Social media has been abuzz with fans divided in opinion about who’s carrying the urban dance genre in South Africa right now.
Wodumo has seen and done it all. The KZN queen is regarded as a pioneer in Gqom and to this day, she still reigns supreme on festival stages as a premium drawing card.
However, fans have brought Mphela’s quick rise to prominence as a valid rebuttal. Many seem to believe that the 21-year-old, who broke out into fame with her viral Amapiano dance videos, has taken the baton from Bongekile Simelane.
Part of the argument is that Mphela, who’s been on a Euro tour with Major League DJs, has greater reach than the wife of Big Nuz’ Mampintsha.
These were some of the arguments that drove the trending topic on social media:
Babes Wodumo went from being on the Black Panther playlist to …. this. Ngenxa yendoda who didn't bother to submit her visa application so she could do the Black Panther press tour. Yerrr fok, yinja uMampintsha https://t.co/Y9ZHToXGTa

Babes issues response to Mphela comparisons
Mphela, who may or may not have been privy to the debate, has kept to herself for now. The Amapiano star is still in the United Kingdom, obliterating stages at music festivals.
Babes, on the other hand, who’s last event booking was in August, found it necessary to feed the narrative with a couple of responses:
