In an alternative universe where Covid-19 never happened, thousands of young renegades would have been moshpitting in the dusty grounds of Cotton Fest in February.
SA misses Cotton Fest fever
Riky Rick could not have fathomed the cultural influence his annual festival would have when the idea was conceived in 2018.
It has brought new energy to South African Hip-Hop and more importantly, it has grown to be the premier platform for the undiscovered to have their 15 minutes of fame in front of thousands of music fans.
The likes of Kash CPT and Dee Koala, both Capetonian exports, are just a few examples of young talents that have since had budding careers after brief cameos at Cotton Fest.
The annual event was supposed to return for its third instalment in February 2021. However, due to its scale as a potential Covid-19 superspreader, events of this magnitude are still prohibited under adjusted Alert Level 3 restrictions.

Still, Riky and his team found another way to restore the feeling. Fans can now watch a 10-minute-long montage of 2020’s festival with a pumping soundtrack mix that includes songs from Boity, Focalistic, Shane Eagle and Yanga Chief.

Will the festival return later this year?
A pertinent question on everyone’s mind is, will the festival return in 2021? Well, Riky Rick’s crew would not be baited into providing a direct answer.
“Thank you to all the artists, DJs , hosts, production team, sponsors and fans for creating memories with us. WE WILL BE BACK,” the festival wrote on YouTube.
