The illustrious 2023 BET Hip-Hop Awards paid tribute to the late South African rapper Kiernan ‘AKA‘ Forbes by bestowing upon him the distinguished Global Visionary Award, celebrating his notable contributions to the international Hip-Hop community.

The accolade was graciously accepted by his parents, Lynn and Tony Forbes, during the awards ceremony held in Atlanta on Tuesday, 3 October 2023.
This homage comes amidst significant developments in the ongoing investigation into the grim murders of AKA and businessman Tebello ‘Tibz’ Motsoane.

On 6 September 2023, the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) police commissioner, Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, conveyed the identification of several vehicles and at least one firearm associated with the heinous crime, hinting at a potential unravelling of the mysterious circumstances surrounding the fatalities.
“We had identified at least one firearm that has been used and positively identified to have shot and killed Mr Forbes on that evening,” Lt-Gen Mkhwanazi revealed.
Returning with a live ceremony at Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre, this year’s BET Hip-Hop Awards not only honoured the luminaries of the genre but also marked the 50th anniversary of Hip-Hop with stellar performances slated from a blend of contemporary and legendary artists, from the likes of DaBaby, Fivio Foreign, GloRilla, Sexyy Red, to Kid Capri, Kool DJ Red Alert, Scott Storch, and DJ Spinderella.

The event’s telecast is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 October 2023, at 21:00 ET (03:00 CAT on Wednesday, 11 October 2023) on BET Africa.
In a parallel acknowledgement, AKA posthumously dominated the nomination list with seven nods for his album Mass Country at the upcoming 2023 SAMAs, scheduled for 17 and 18 November at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC).
