Eskom confirmed on Sunday that the loadshedding schedule will kick off at Stage 4 on Monday, 6 March 2023. Here’s what you can expect this week.
UPDATE: Stage 5 loadshedding will be in effect from 16:00 on Monday, 6 March 2023 until 05:00 the next day., Eskom confirmed in a statement. The power utility explained the increase in loadshedding stages came after the breakdown of five generation units.

Following a week of rotational power cuts switched between Stages 4 and 5, the national electricity supplier revealed that the goal is to reduce blackouts to Stage 3 during morning peak periods, barring no further unplanned breakdowns occur.
In a statement, the power utility confirmed that Stage 4 loadshedding would be in effect from 16:00 on Sunday, 5 March 2023 until 05:00 on Tuesday, 7 March 2023.
Thereafter, rotational power cuts should switch between Stage 3 during morning peaks and Stage 4 from 16:00 until 05:00 the next morning “until further notice.”
In an update on the latest issues reported at South Africa’s generation outlets in the past 24 hours, Eskom revealed that unplanned breakdowns occurred at:
- Camden (one unit);
- Majuba (one unit); and
- Kriel (two units).
“The return to service of a generating unit each at Hendrina, Medupi and Tutuka power stations was delayed. In addition, the repairs to the damaged towers from Cahora Bassa is taking longer than anticipated,” Eskom explained.
As of Sunday, 5 March 2022, breakdowns amounted to:
- 17 340MW (unplanned) – up 191MW from Thursday, 2 March 2023
- 5 654MW (planned maintenance) – up 740MW from Thursday, 2 March 2023
