Grammy-winning singer Shakira is set to make history at the 2023 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) by becoming the first South American artist to receive MTV’s prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award.
Shakira will be celebrated in a huge way at 2023 MTV VMAs
The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on 12 September 2023 and will be broadcast live from the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey.
In addition to being honoured with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, Shakira will also grace the stage with a performance at the event.
Shakira, a four-time VMA winner, has received four nominations this year in the categories of Best Collaboration, Best Latin (twice), and Artist of the Year.
Her impact on the music world goes beyond her chart-topping hits; she has been a trailblazer for women globally and played a significant role in popularising Latin music on the international stage.
Bruce Gillmer, President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events at Paramount and Chief Content Officer of Music at Paramount+, highlighted Shakira’s exceptional musical prowess and her role in shaping the globalization of Latin music.
Gillmer stated,
“Her massive impact across the musical landscape will be long-lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level.”
The Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award is a highly prestigious honour that recognises artists for their exceptional contributions to music videos and their influence on popular culture.
Past recipients of this award include iconic artists such as Beyoncé, Madonna, Justin Timberlake, and Rihanna.
The 2023 MTV VMAs will feature a lineup of outstanding performers, including Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin, and Stray Kids, with additional performers yet to be announced.
