In a recent interview, Pinkett-Smith divulged that she and the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air alum have been living separately for seven years, dating back to 2016.
This disclosure came as a surprise to many fans who were unaware of the couple’s arrangements. The reason behind their decision to live separately stemmed from their ongoing endeavour to figure out how to maintain their partnership, as told by Pinkett-Smith to seasoned broadcaster Hoda Kotb.
The circumstances that led to their separation are multi-faceted, with both individuals being ensnared in their expectations of each other, she explained.
Although divorce was a consideration, Pinkett-Smith chose to uphold the promise she made to work through any challenges that come their way, foregoing the option of divorce.
“I made a promise that there will never be a reason for us to get a divorce. We will work through whatever, and I just haven’t been able to break that promise,” she said.
Jada Pinkett-Smith and Will Smith’s love story began back in 1994 on the set of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, evolving over the years into a marriage on 31 December 1997, which has since welcomed two children into their lives.
Despite the public scrutiny surrounding their marriage, especially following allegations of an affair involving Pinkett-Smith and singer August Alsina, the couple remains steadfast in their unique understanding and arrangement of their marriage.
“We’re still figuring it out. We’ve been doing some really heavy-duty work together. We just got deep love for each other and we are going to figure out what that looks like for us,” Pinkett-Smith said.
