Rapper Iggy Azalea recently received backlash after it was discovered she had advocated for leniency in the sentencing of fellow artist Tory Lanez, who was recently sentenced to 10 years in prison for shooting Megan Thee Stallion.
Here’s what Iggy Azalea said about Tory Lanez in her letter
Azalea’s heartfelt letter to the judge, which was obtained by Legal Affairs and Trials, highlighted the positive aspects of Lanez’s character and challenged the public perception of the situation.
Azalea’s three-page letter addressed to Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge David Herriford emphasised her personal interactions with Lanez and vouched for his character.
The letter expressed Azalea’s shock at the tragedy and urges the judge to consider a sentence that is “transformational and not life-destroying.”
In her letter, the Australian-born rapper painted a different picture of Lanez than what has been portrayed in the media. She described Lanez as a kind and compassionate person who has always been respectful towards her and others.
Azalea asserted that she has never witnessed Lanez losing his temper or behaving aggressively towards women.
“I deeply appreciate the person he is and have never witnessed him loose [sp] his temper or raise his voice at a woman. He’s always been incredibly respectful of me and I refuse to believe that he would do anything in malice especially to a woman.”
Azalea’s letter emphasised Lanez’s positive attributes, depicting him as someone who seeks personal growth and is committed to helping others.
She shared an anecdote in which Lanez expressed gratitude for his time in jail, seeing it as an opportunity to humble himself and become an even kinder person.
“He said this is an opportunity to humble himself and soften his heart – ironic to hear one of the kindest people I know strive to become even kinder. I’m not shocked – Its who he is. Watering and shining light on others until something beautiful grows,” Azalea added.
Azalea recalled her interactions with Lanez in the music industry, highlighting his talent as a songwriter and his willingness to collaborate with others.
She spoke highly of his dedication to helping fellow artists and describes him as a driving force for positive change.
Azalea’s letter concluded with a plea for the judge to consider Lanez’s potential for transformation and the impact of his actions on his family, son, and countless others who depend on him.
“I’ve never encountered this jealous, rage-filled person he’s accused of being. I know him to be someone who’s always bursting with happiness. In the moments you want to cry, if you call daystar, he will find a way to make you laugh,” Azalea wrote.
