Born in Las Vegas on 14 June 1984, and abandoned at birth at the University Medical Centre of Southern Nevada, Hydeia was adopted by Loren and Patricia Broadbent as an infant.
Diagnosed with HIV/AIDS at three years old, she didn’t let her condition define her life. Instead, Hydeia embarked on a journey of activism at the tender age of six, using her voice to educate and inspire others about the realities of living with HIV/AIDS.
Hydeia’s activism was far-reaching; she made numerous appearances on national television, including The Oprah Winfrey Show, Good Morning America, and 20/20, and was involved with the Magic Johnson Foundation.
Her efforts were not only limited to the United States, as she became an international motivational speaker and a pioneer in AIDS activism.
She was among the first African-American youths to openly discuss the epidemic, earning her recognition as one of the Most Influential African Americans by Ebony Magazine in both 2008 and 2011.
