Amidst the backdrop of a potential writers’ strike and an impending actors’ strike, the nominations for the highly anticipated 75th Annual Emmy Awards have been unveiled.
2023 Emmy Awards: Nominees announced – Here’s what you must know
The prestigious awards ceremony recognises excellence in the realm of television, and this year’s nominees were announced in a live virtual ceremony on Wednesday morning by Yvette Nicole Brown, accompanied by Television Academy Chairman and CEO Frank Scherma.
To qualify for consideration, shows had to air or stream between June 1, 2022, and May 31, 2023. The Emmy Awards are currently scheduled to be broadcast on September 18th; however, the occurrence and duration of any strike could potentially affect the telecast date. As of now, no host has been announced for the event.
A notable aspect of this year’s nominations is the eligibility criteria for certain shows. As “Stranger Things” divided its season last year, only the two episodes comprising Volume 2 were eligible for nominations, but not in the series or main acting categories. On the other hand, “White Lotus,” which performed remarkably well in the limited series category in 2022, has been shifted into the Drama Series category. This move places it in competition with other HBO shows such as “The Last of Us,” “House of the Dragon,” and “Succession.”
Additionally, this year marks the final eligibility year for several beloved shows, including “Succession,” “Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Barry,” “Atlanta,” “Dead to Me,” “Better Call Saul,” and presumably “Ted Lasso.” These series have concluded their runs before the eligibility deadline, adding an extra layer of significance to their nominations.
