Violent Mbambiso High School stabbing results in death of Grade 10 pupil
On Tuesday, at approximately 14:30, a 20-year-old grade 10 student was attacked and fatally stabbed by an individual who had been expelled from the same school the previous year, police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala revealed in a statement.
“Immediately after school hours, the victim was attacked just a stone throw away from his school,” Brig Mohlala confirmed.
The police found the victim lying in a pool of blood with a stab wound to his chest, and a knife, believed to be the murder weapon, was discovered nearby.
Paramedics declared the student dead at the scene.
The circumstances surrounding the stabbing are currently unclear, and investigations are ongoing. The suspect initially fled the scene but was later turned over to the police by his parents.
Given the suspect’s minor status, a probation officer was involved for assessment, and the suspect was released into parental custody.
“We really prioritised school safety, as a result school safety campaigns are conducted on regular basis with the specific focus on bullying. We cannot be at every school every time, but parent’s involvement can play a major role in ensuring the safety of both learners and teachers at schools,” Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela reacted.
The Department of Education in Mpumalanga has since deployed a team of officials to render psycho-social counselling services to learners, educators and close family members who’ve been traumatised by the incident.
