The trial of Senzo Meyiwa, the South African football goalkeeper who was tragically killed in October 2014, took an intriguing turn as the Pretoria High Court heard allegations of questionable involvement by former Gauteng Hawks head Shadrack Sibiya in the murder investigation.
Sibiya’s involvement reportedly occurred during his suspension from the police force.
The revelations emerged during the cross-examination of police witness Constable Sizwe Skhumbuzo Zungu.

Zungu testified that in 2019, while the murder investigation was ongoing, he had a meeting with Shadrack Sibiya. During this meeting, Zungu shared information related to the case and his suspicions regarding those involved in Meyiwa’s murder.
According to Zungu, Major-General Vincent Leshabane, who was his cluster commander at the time, briefed Sibiya about the information provided by Zungu.
Leshabane also informed Sibiya that an investigation had linked Muzikawukhulelwa Sibiya and Bongani Sandiso Ntanzi to the case. Zungu claimed that he was subsequently invited to share this information with Shadrack Sibiya.

During their meeting, Sibiya reportedly acknowledged the accuracy of the information and expressed interest in the case. He also inquired about the officer responsible for the case within the office of the national commissioner.
Zungu testified that Sibiya proposed involving Warrant Officer Meshack Makhubo of the Hawks to listen to the information. Makhubo was one of the investigating officers assigned to the case.
However, it was pointed out during the cross-examination that at the time of this meeting in 2019, Shadrack Sibiya had been “fired from SAPS and was only reinstated in 2020.”
This raised questions about Sibiya’s status as a civilian at the time of his involvement in the case and how he knew the information shared by Zungu was accurate.
The trial resumes on Tuesday.
