According to reports, Mofokeng was lured from a braai at a clubhouse to another location by a mutual friend, where the alleged gang rape took place.
The disturbing nature of the crime was compounded by the fact that the suspects, also minors, have yet to be apprehended.
Adding to the victim’s ordeal, the suspects have since engaged in online harassment, further victimising Mofokeng by branding her a liar and inflicting additional emotional trauma.
Amid the backlash, a WhatsApp conversation leaked online, revealing disturbing details about the incident, and the callous manner the suspects discussed the incident.
According to the conversation, the suspects believed that Mofokeng would not remember the incident due to her being unconscious at the time. The conversation also included graphic and sensitive details about the nature of the assault.
The aftermath of the incident saw tensions escalate when Mofokeng’s sisters confronted the father of one of the boys involved.
This confrontation reportedly turned physical, with accusations of assault being levelled against the father.
The situation was further aggravated when the sisters were verbally attacked and forcefully removed from a moving vehicle.
Suspects linked to alleged rape still at large
Despite the gravity of the accusations, the suspects remain unapprehended. In a recent development, one of the individuals involved issued a public apology on social media, expressing regret and asking for forgiveness.
However, this apology has been met with scepticism regarding its sincerity and timing.
Mofokeng has since received medical attention and is currently safe with her family.
The case of Refilwe Mofokeng is not an isolated incident in South Africa, where rape and gender-based violence remain pervasive.
Recent statistics highlight an alarming rate of sexual offences, with a significant number of victims being minors.
