A cash-in-transit heist was pulled off on a busy street in Palm Ridge, East Rand, on Tuesday morning, and locals were quick to swarm the area in search of scraps.
Watch: Palm Ridge locals scavenge for cash after CIT robbery
Details around the brazen robbery are still murky, at this stage. The condition of the security officials who were transporting the undisclosed amount of money is currently unknown.
We also have not, as yet, been able to source useful information on the suspects involved in the heist. However, video footage of the aftermath surfaced on social media, showing large crowds gathered at the crime scene, in search of bank notes that survived the explosion.
The debris of the money truck was scattered all over the road and what remained of its skeleton was in flames. This, however, did not deter onlookers looking to score on leftover cash.
Not only is it a prosecutable crime to loot, especially from a cash van heist, but swarming an active crime scene makes the job all that more impossible for law enforcement duty-bound to hand over air-tight cases to the NPA.
If, for example, suspects are arrested in this robbery, then investigators may not be allowed to use any forensic evidence collected from this contaminated crime scene.
Our attempts to get an update from Palm Ridge police were unsuccessful at the time this article was published.
