Mitchells Plain homicide detectives are investigating the circumstances that led to the horrific death of 25-year-old Aqeela Jacobs.
Mitchells Plain police baffled by death of innocent woman
As reported by Daily Voice, Jacobs was targeted in a drive-by shooting that took place in Lentegeur, in the wee hours of Thursday morning.
In a statement, Cape Town police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg confirmed a team of officers was dispatched to Azalia Street, at approximately 01:25, after residents had heard at least 12 gunshots ring off.
“The circumstances surrounding a shooting incident this morning at about 1.25am in Azalia Street, Lentegeur, Mitchell’s Plain, where a 25-year-old female was fatally wounded are under investigation,” Twigg noted.
According to Jacobs’ sister, Nathalie Scheepers, who spoke to the cited publication, the victim was last seen walking with her boyfriend and another individual. Eyewitnesses claim the trio was caught off guard by gunmen travelling in a red Toyota Tazz.
Jacobs, probably spooked by the attack, cornered herself in a driveway and that’s when the armed gunmen fatally shot her.
The two other individuals she was with managed to escape the onslaught.
Azalia Street residents surfaced a while later and found the 25-year-old curled up on the driveway, showing no signs of vitality.
“Lentegeur police are investigating a murder case. The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” Sgt Twigg confirmed.
Scheepers was at work when she learned of her sister’s death.
“I worked the night shift and around 06:00, my mother called me and she could hardly speak. I couldn’t understand everything she told me but only heard the important bits that my sister was no longer alive. I dropped everything and rushed back home,” she said.
By then, Jacobs’ body had been transferred to the morgue for forensic examination.
Earlier this week, a four-year-old boy was struck by a stray bullet in a similar drive-by shooting reported in Tafelsig. Fortunately, the boy and his mother, who was shot in the arm, survived the attack.
Unfortunately, a man, believed to be the boy’s father, was fatally wounded. The suspects in that murder case are believed to be still at large.
