Khayelitsha police are investigating yet another mass shooting that resulted in the deaths of four victims.
Khayelitsha mass shooting: Police launch search for killers in Site B
This is the fourth time in 2022 that multiple people have been targeted in mass shootings in Khayelitsha. In May 2022 alone, nine victims were gunned down in two incidents.
This time around, police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed in a statement that four victims were shot and killed inside Madiba Supermarket at approximately 19:00 on Tuesday.
Local police were called to R588 Sulani Drive and found three unidentified men dead on the scene, while a fourth victim was seriously injured. The unknown man “later succumbed in hospital to [his] injuries.”
“Reports from the scene indicate that unknown gunmen entered the Madiba supermarket in R588 Sulani Drive, Site B and fired several shots at 19:00.
“Three of those shot inside the shop died on the scene whilst a fourth victim who was seriously injured was transported to a medical facility for treatment. He later died in hospital as a result of the injuries suffered,” Brig. Potelwa noted.
A team of detectives from the organised crime unit have been recruited for the murder investigation, suggesting there may be a belief that these mass shootings are linked to gang violence.
“The motive for the incident is yet to be determined. The identities of the deceased persons have not been confirmed yet,” the police added.
Thus far in 2022, Khayelitsha mass shootings have claimed 24 lives and the cases, as things stand, remain unsolved. In the Enkanini mass shooting, one of the suspects in the case was recently released on R800 bail. He is due back in court on 7 July 2022.
At this time, police have not explicitly made any links to the Khayelitsha mass shootings.
