Kelly Khumalo has been a constant fixture in the Senzo Meyiwa murder case, and on Wednesday, the singer’s name resurfaced in a bombshell revelation.
Kelly Khumalo alleged involvement in Senzo Meyiwa murder takes centre stage
Brigadier Bongani Gininda has been under the cosh since his cross-examination resumed on Monday.
At the forefront of the defence’s strategy is the lead investigator’s affidavit, which he used to secure arrest warrants for the five suspects implicated in the former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper’s murder.
Already, claims from the detective’s sworn statement have implicated Accused 1 Muzi Sibiya as the whistleblower, who unravelled the accused’s alleged crimes.
The statement also identified Accused 2 Bongani Ntanzi as a notorious hitman with deep-rooted ties to KwaZulu-Natal’s (KZN) nkabi network.
On Wednesday, social media burst into a frenzy when, in the affidavit, Brigadier Gininda listed Kelly Khumalo as the alleged mastermind who orchestrated the murder of her former lover.
This assertion was apparently made by Sibiya when he allegedly confessed his role in the murder. Of course, the ongoing trial-within-a-trial is in the process of ascertaining the validity of these confessions.
However, Gininda’s claims about Khumalo’s involvement in Meyiwa’s murder were lent further credence by evidence found in Accused 3 Carlos Ncube’s cell phone data.
According to the lead investigator, not only was Khumalo allegedly in direct contact with Ncube, but an image of an undisclosed amount of cash found in the murder accused’s mobile gallery was also discovered in Kelly’s phone.
“There is no reasonable explanation why she would be in contact with her boyfriends killer. It is clear she hated him.She meant killing him,” Gininda wrote in his affidavit.
In 2021, before the start of the Senzo Meyiwa trial, we reported that state prosecutors were in possession of evidence placing Khumalo as a central figure in the death of the late football star.
During the main trial. State witness Colonel Lambertus Steyn also revealed crucial cellphone records that showed communication between Kelly Khumalo and accused number one, Muzi Sibiya, after Meyiwa’s murder on 26 October 2014.
Khumalo has long scoffed any notion she was, in any way, involved in the death of Meyiwa. It’s still unclear, at this juncture, if the singer will take the stand.
The trial-within-a-trial was still ongoing when this article was published.
