Reports indicate that community members, driven by allegations of criminal activities, took justice into their own hands in the early hours of Monday morning, at Kanana Extension 4.
The mob reportedly went door to door, rounding up the suspects and forcing them to identify their accomplices.
Without the intervention of law enforcement officials or the necessary legal processes to ventilate fact from fiction, the five men were stoned to death.
In a harrowing development, authorities have, thus far, not found any tangible evidence linking the five ‘suspects’ to crimes they were accused of.
Gauteng police spokesperson, Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, confirmed the incident, stating,
“Five men were found dead… The suspicion is that they were stoned to death by community members.”
Mob justice, while a response to crime, is itself a criminal act under South African law. It undermines the rule of law and can lead to severe legal consequences for those involved.
In the South African judicial system, acts of mob justice are prosecuted under criminal law, often leading to charges of murder or assault.
In July 2023, six men were sentenced to lengthy prison terms for their involvement in a mob justice incident that resulted in murder.
In the Tembisa matter, police confirmed that, at this stage, no arrests have been made in this case.
