The Claremont area in Johannesburg witnessed a shooting incident near a school in Eldorado Park.
The details surrounding the shooting remain unclear, and it is believed that the perpetrators are still free.
This event follows a series of gang-related violence in Eldorado Park, despite increased police efforts to curb such activities. In September 2023, Gauteng police intensified their presence in the area.
At the time, police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi reported that General Elias Mawela, the provincial commissioner, had allocated additional resources to address the persistent gang violence in these communities.
The anti-gang campaign was spurred by a successful blitz, where 73 suspects were arrested in connection with 90 open cases.
“The fact that these 73 are facing 90 charges tells us that they were the source of terror within those areas, and further charges against them cannot be ruled out as the Anti-Gang Unit is still investigating,” General Mawela said at the time.
The full-scale violence in September 2023 was predicated by an alarming incident that occurred at Eldorado Park Secondary School, where a learner was stabbed by an illegal intruder during an unannounced oversight visit by the Legislature’s Portfolio Committee on Community Safety and the Education Committee.
That case and countless other violent crimes in Eldorado Park remain unsolved.
