In a tragic turn of events, a disturbing altercation unfolded in the parking lot of a popular nightclub in Braamfontein, resulting in the untimely murder of an off-duty Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer.
Braamfontein off-duty cop murder probed by IPID
Startling footage captured by a bystander’s camera has shed light on the incident that took place in the early hours of Monday, 26 June 2023.
According to JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla, the deceased officer was allegedly attempting to exit the parking lot when he encountered a vehicle blocking his path.
An argument swiftly erupted between the officer and the driver, escalating to a point where shots were fired, ultimately claiming the life of the JMPD officer.
Fihla revealed that subsequent investigations uncovered the alleged shooter to be a member of the South African Police Service (SAPS). At present, no arrests have been made in connection with the incident.

Preliminary reports supported by footage circulating online suggest that the tragic altercation ensued when the deceased officer, purportedly armed, approached the vehicle occupied by the SAPS officer and his companion.
It is alleged that the deceased initiated the assault on the SAPS officer outside the nightclub, prompting a response from the latter who retaliated by discharging his firearm.
While the details surrounding this incident are distressing, the Hillbrow police have assumed responsibility for the investigation.
Robbie Raburabu, a representative of IPID, confirmed the shooting to News24 and acknowledged the tragic loss of life suffered by the metro police officer.
Raburabu assured the public that IPID is diligently investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, emphasising that no names can be disclosed at this stage.
