The Bedfordview nursery shooting was allegedly a botched assassination attempt, according to sources close to the situation.
Bedfordview nursery shooting: Here are the latest updates
Chaos erupted outside a nursery situated on Bradford Road, when multiple gunshots reverberated across the upscale western Ekurhuleni suburb, on Tuesday morning.
According to the Residents Action Group (RAG), a non-profit organisation that administers safety and security in Bedfordview, an unidentified woman who was travelling in a white SUV with a male bodyguard, was targeted by a lone gunman minutes after dropping off her child at the nursery.
The bodyguard was struck multiple times on his upper body and, fortunately, the woman survived the shooting unscathed.
The male victim was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was receiving life-threatening injuries at the time this article was published.
“With the help of other security companies, RAG secured the scene until the SA Police Service arrived. The victims were taken to hospital and a police investigation is underway,” RAG noted.
While the identity of the woman remains unknown, at this time, reports by Kaya News suggest that while the male bodyguard was struck in the attack, the female passenger may have been the main target.
It’s believed the woman is linked to an Ethiopian national who is currently in court facing charges related to kidnapping and human trafficking.
“His case was heard in the Johannesburg Magistrates Court last week, where he was denied bail,” insiders revealed.
It remains unclear, at this stage, if the Bedfordview nursery shooting was, in any way, linked to the Ethiopian national’s ongoing case.
This is a developing story.
