While most parts of the Western Cape enjoyed a semblance of normalcy amid the ongoing Cape Town taxi strike, tensions were brewing in Kleinmond on Thursday, 10 August 2023.
What is happening in Kleinmond?
Morning traffic in the Overberg community was rendered to a halt after large groups of protesters blocked key routes.
Details about the Kleinmond protests were still sketchy when this article was published. This early into the report, it remains unclear if the demonstration is, in any way, linked to the taxi strike, which, on Thursday, entered its seventh day.

At this juncture, the R44 has been identified as a route to avoid completely.

Latest updates on the Cape Town taxi strike for Thursday, 10 August 2023
On Thursday, the Cape Town taxi strike entered its seventh day with little-to-no incidents of unrest to report. While law enforcement authorities have been deployed in numbers to ensure safety in and around hotspot areas, it’s likely the unnerving calm restored on the roads has everything to do with SANTACO’s bid to interdict the City of Cape Town’s impounding operations.

On Wednesday, 9 August 2023, SANTACO released a statement confirming there will be no taxis in Cape Town on Thursday. The taxi association confirmed it will be approaching the courts for an interdict forcing the City of Cape Town to release all impounded minibuses. See the full statement below.
The City, however, has yet to yield to SANTACO’s demands. In fact, according to MEC for Public Safety JP Smith, law enforcement authorities are actively working on 198 criminal cases linked to the taxi strike, as of Wednesday, 9 August 2023.
“These include charges of murder, arson as well as malicious damage to property, assault and GBH,” Smith revealed.
