Toekomsrus protests: Here’s everything we know
Details about the unrest in the West Rand town were sketchy when this article was published. However, the chaotic scenes witnessed by passers-by and motorists on Thursday morning follow warnings of a shutdown that first surfaced on social media a day before.
According to Randfontein community members not participating in the unrest, a chain message did the rounds calling for Toekomsrus residents to join a shutdown aimed at rendering a complete halt of all traffic and business operations in the area.
“Please note Toekomsrus will be shut down.Shops will be closed ,Taxis will not operate ,schools will be closed,” one user wrote.
While no formal statement has surfaced from those behind the Toekomsrus protests, one resident blasted the entire notion of shutting down the community as a message to the DA-run municipality on its failure to provide adequate service delivery.
“Toekomsrus Shutdown for what ?? Rent Office was burnt like Ages ago and still not rebuilt… So what makes People think that The Mayor will come and resolve Service delivery in Toekomsrus when you do a shutdown in Toekies itself??? Also If I can remember clearly during Election campaign for Local Elections, the Election Poster of DA stated ” We deliver ” and to date we are still sitting with the same Problems we had before that Election and in the last decade …. Who is holding them Responsible???” the user wrote.
At this stage, motorists driving in and around Toekomsrus are advised to either avoid the area where possible or, at the very least, practice extreme levels of caution.
