As the Mother City waves goodbye to the festive season and soaks up the remaining summer days, the City’s Recreation and Parks Department has issued a reminder about the operational timelines of Cape Town swimming pools for the rest of the summer.
It’s time to splash the news: here’s when you’ll need to pack up your swim gear for the year.
Community swimming pools, which have been a splash hit this summer, will keep their doors open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 until the end of February 2024. This gives residents and visitors plenty of time to dive into summer fun.
But don’t get too comfortable on those poolside loungers. Starting 1 March 2024, these pools will shift gears to weekend-only operations.
This schedule will last until the Easter weekend, from 29 March to 1 April 2024, when the pools will close their gates for the off-season. It’s a gentle nudge that all good things, including endless summer days at the pool, must come to an end.
The Recreation and Parks Department isn’t just focused on keeping the pools open; they’re also committed to ensuring these spots are safe and enjoyable.
With lifeguards at the ready, they’re making a splash in community safety.
But remember, a pool’s operational status might change due to maintenance or operational needs. S
o, before you put on your swim cap, check the City’s website for any last-minute schedule updates and don’t forget to peek at the area’s load-shedding schedule.
Why the loadshedding fuss, you ask? Well, facilities close during loadshedding periods, as there are specific rules for swimming pool operations at these times.
It’s all part of the plan to maintain top-notch water quality and ensure a safe, enjoyable swimming experience.
And what about the beach, you wonder? Fear not, beach lovers.
Lifeguard hours at designated beaches remain unchanged, from 10:00 to 18:00 daily. Continuous surveillance and supervision mean you can enjoy the waves without worry.
Councillor Patricia Van der Ross, Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health encourages the public to make the most of these facilities.
“We have waved goodbye to the festive season, but summer is still in full swing. We invite the public to enjoy our facilities while seeking relief from the heat. However, always exercise caution for your safety and that of others,” she said.
