Dr Zahid Baroodien, the City of Cape Town’s Water and Sanitation MEC, addressed the concerns regarding the source of the foul odour that had many residents puzzled and concerned.
Dr Baroodien explained that the smell, which was reported in Woodstock, Observatory, Greenpoint, and predominantly the CBD, prompted immediate investigations by the city’s Pump Station teams and Environmental Health officials.
“This morning I was made aware of what is described as a sewage smell blanketing parts of the city. At present, the Pump Station teams are inspecting their facilities to identify whether the source of the smell is located at these stations,” the MEC stated.
He reassured residents that the odour was not related to the Koeberg pump station in Milnerton, which is operating efficiently with three pumps and a temporary on-site.
The focus of the investigation shifted to the city’s port after Environmental Health was activated to inspect the area.
The cause of the pervasive smell was traced back to a ship harboured in the city.
“Environmental Health have confirmed that the source of the smell across the city is a ship in the harbour. The ship arrived last night and is carrying cattle. It is due to leave the port tonight (Monday, 19 February 2024) at [21:00],” Dr Baroodien revealed.
The identification of the ship as the source of the smell brings a sigh of relief to many residents who were concerned about potential sewage issues within the city.
The City of Cape Town has committed to providing updates as the investigation continues, ensuring the public is informed on the matter.
