With e-hailing services faced with immense pressure to heighten safety and security measures, particularly for women in South Africa, the latest incident to come from the Mother City has only added to brewing frustrations.
A woman, whose identity has been protected, leaked images and videos she took during an e-hailing trip on Monday that show the harrowing moment she caught the driver exposing his genitals.
A short clip of the nauseating encounter has since gone viral on social media, showing the man casually driving around Cape Town during peak traffic with his sack bulging out of his pants
Fortunately, the passenger, who was seated next to the driver, completed the trip without harm. Moreover, the woman was bright enough to take a picture of the e-hailing vehicle and alert her network about the dangers of encountering such a driver.
While we cannot include the disturbing footage and videos of the bizarre encounter, or include the vehicle’s registration plates, the e-hailing driver accused of the sexual assault operates in a silver/white Toyota Etios with CAA- plates.
Here are five safety measures passengers can take to ensure safety while using e-hailing services:
- Verify the Ride: Before entering the vehicle, confirm the driver’s name, car make, model, and licence plate number match the information provided in the e-hailing app. Some apps also provide a photo of the driver for further verification.
- Stay in Contact: Share your trip details with a trusted friend or family member. Many e-hailing apps have features that allow you to share your ride details, including the driver’s name, vehicle information, and your real-time location.
- Choose a Safe Pickup and Drop-off Location: Opt for well-lit and populated areas for your pickup and drop-off points. Avoid sharing your exact home address by setting the pickup or drop-off point near your location, such as a nearby landmark, if you have privacy concerns.
- Sit in the Back Seat: Sitting in the back seat creates physical distance between you and the driver, which can help protect your personal space. It also gives you two exit points, making it easier to leave the vehicle quickly if needed.
- Trust Your Instincts: If you feel uneasy or notice any red flags before or during the ride, don’t ignore your instincts. You have the right to end the ride early if you feel unsafe. Use the app to report any inappropriate behaviour to the e-hailing service provider.
