The City of Cape Town confirmed, in a statement released on Tuesday, any request to ban cycling on the Sea Point promenade will not be entertained.
City approves cycling on Sea Point promenade
The decision, the City noted, came after a unanimous vote from residents of the Atlantic Seaboard suburb agreed that “bicycles should be allowed along this very popular recreational space.”
According to Cape Town’s MMC for Urban Mobility Rob Quintas, out of a total of 1953 comments received “the majority of the respondents supports cycling on the promenade.”
However, Quintas said, concerns were raised — and duly noted — “about pedestrian safety and the potential danger and risk posed by cyclists.”
“The City will, in coming months, investigate interventions that will improve the safety of all of those using the promenade,” he said.
As far as entertaining any further requests of a ban on cycling on the Sea Point promenade, Quintas ruled, “is off the table.”
The City confirmed the outcomes of the public participation process, along with recommendations made by the public on safety, will be filed in a report and tabled at the Portfolio Committee on Urban Mobility and Sub-council 16 for consideration, some time mid-year.
“The Sea Point Promenade is one of Cape Town’s most iconic recreational spaces. Thus, the vigorous engagements and number of comments came as no surprise. We welcome the interest in this topic, and I also want to thank the City officials for their efforts in facilitating an inclusive public participation process,” Quintas wrote.
