Eastern Cape floods left households decimated this weekend and, according to Monday’s weather readings, more rainfall and thunderstorms are expected.
Eastern Cape floods: Weather forecast for Monday 10 January 2022
Ventusky readings indicate the weekend’s torrential weather that resulted in the death of one person and hundreds of homes destroyed is likely to continue on Monday 10 January 2022.
From what we understand, 3.2mm rainfall accompanied by moderate thunderstorms will fall over Aliwal North and surrounding regions on the banks of the Orange River in Eastern Cape.
The epicentre of this torrential system will swirl around Fauresmith, in the Free State, on Monday morning, and motorists are warned to either avoid the R704 or practice extreme levels of caution as it is likely to be struck by severe 12mm rainfall and thunderstorms.
Slight patches of drizzle expected on Monday morning will prepare Queenstown, Gqeberha and Graaf-Reinet for an afternoon of flood-threatening weather.
By 14:00, the storm’s epicentre would have moved to the interior of the Eastern Cape, bringing about the possibility of further floods that have severely affected Buffalo City.
Areas that may experience the worst of Monday’s wet weather include:
- Queenstown
- Cradock
- Graaf-Reinet
- Fort Beaufort
- Stutterheim
- Bhisho
- Gcuwa
- East London
- Grahamstown
- Mthatha
The torrential system is expected to pass in the late hours of Monday, making its way towards and settling on the coastal region of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) on Tuesday 11 January 2022.
