Tom Holland’s Peter Parker character has been exposed as Spider-Man on No Way Home and the world has been abuzz with speculation since Marvel dropped the follow-up to Far From Home.
Spider-Man No Way Home trailer ruptures the internet
Comic geeks have had sleepless nights, losing hairs in clumps trying to break down the Easter eggs found in the Spider-Man trailer that dropped this week.
The movie is scheduled for a Christmas release, with the premiere tentatively placed at 17 December 2021. The world has been abuzz with excitement after the trailer promised a sizzling return of the multiverse, with Doctor Strange playing a key role in assisting Peter Parker on his quest to prove his innocence.
Here is a look at the first trailer:
Three crucial things you must know
Those who don’t follow the entangled world of Marvel’s Cinematic Universe may have left the trailer scratching their heads, totally clueless about the clues trickled all over the No Way Home sequel.
While there are too many Easter eggs to divulge in, we have focussed on three crucial things we picked up from the trailer which will most certainly spin this phase of the MCU into a whirlwind.
Doctor Strange’s role on Spider-Man No Way Home
In the trailer, Parker and his newfound girlfriend Michelle Jonas or MJ (notice how in the MCU, the initials hold true to the different portrayals of Spider-Man’s main squeeze), partner up in his quest to not only prove his innocence, but to restore his anonymity as a college kid with two separate lives.
For this quest, the pair approaches Stephen Strange, or Doctor Strange, for his magical prowess. Despite some resistance from Wong, Strange agrees to assist Parker but the mouthy teenager disrupts a spell ritual, sparking a series of unknown events that open up a multiverse.
Easter eggs connected to this multiverse include:
- the appearance of five villains, including Parker’s arch nemesis Doctor Octopus;
- the possibility of a Spider-Man reunion between Toby Macguire, Andrew Garfield and Jake Johnson;
- the possibility of a Spider-Man-meets-Deadpool crossover; and so much more.
Steve Ditko graffiti brings Goblin into the mix
At the start of the trailer, Parker and MJ reflect on recent developments caused by Mysterio (played by Jake Gyllenhaal in Far From Home) on the rooftop of what seems to be their college building in New York.
The camera pans into MJ reading a New York Post newspaper but set in the backdrop and graffitied on the wall, is ‘Ditko”.
Of course, comic geeks know good and well that this may be a tribute to Spider-Man co-founder Steve Ditko, a man shrouded in mystery.
Ditko left Marvel in 1966 without so much as a reason for his departure. However, word quickly got out that this may have been over creative disgruntlement with the development of Goblin’s character.
According to the late Stan Lee, Ditko’s frustrations erupted when he was denied the opportunity to reveal Goblin as a man not related in any way to Harry Osborn. Of course, the latter was the eventuality we were met with in 2002’s Spider-Man starring Toby Maguire.
Will we see a Goblin in No Way Home? More importantly, will this version be an adaptation of Ditko’s ideas? It remains to be seen.
Sandman cameo is not outside of the ‘realm’ of possibility
Already, we know that Spider-Man, or at least a version of Parker, will be in battle with Electro. In the snapshot we see in the trailer, however, the area where the two clash is littered with dust.
Many have come to speculate that this could be a hint at Sandman resurfacing to avenge himself. Of course, this is not confirmed and once again, it plays a role in indicating that more than anything, Holland’s Parker may face a reunion with his predecessors.
