James Selfe was born on 23 August 1955, in Pretoria, South Africa.
He attended Bishops (Diocesan College) and later the University of Cape Town, where he earned a master’s degree.
His political career began as a researcher for the Progressive Federal Party, the precursor to the DA, from 1979 to 1988.
He became the party’s communications director in 1988 and an executive director in 1992.
In 1994, Selfe was elected to the Senate, which later became the National Council of Provinces, participating in the Constitutional Assembly that drafted South Africa’s democratic constitution.
In 1999, he moved to the National Assembly, where he served on the Portfolio Committee on Justice and Correctional Services.
Selfe was a significant figure in the DA, serving as the party’s Federal Council Chairperson for almost two decades under leaders Tony Leon, Helen Zille, and Mmusi Maimane.
Selfe’s dedication to justice and transparency was evident in his testimony before the Zondo Commission in February 2021 regarding Bosasa’s catering contracts for the Department of Correctional Services.
He consistently called for parliamentary investigations into corruption, highlighting his commitment to accountability.
