Nicki Minaj was arrested in Amsterdam for alleged drug possession but has since been released.
Nicki Minaj clears the air on Amsterdam arrest
Earlier on Saturday, Nicki Minaj found herself in a troubling situation when Amsterdam police took her into custody on suspicion of carrying drugs.
The incident quickly went viral, with Minaj recording parts of it on Instagram Live.
In the video, an officer confronted Minaj, stating, “You’re carrying drugs,” to which she repeatedly denied, insisting, “I’m not carrying drugs. I need a lawyer present.”
The situation escalated as Minaj demanded legal representation before cooperating further.
After being taken into custody, Minaj was released later in the day.
She took to Instagram to share her thoughts, suggesting that her ongoing Pink Friday 2 Tour might be facing sabotage attempts.
“They’ve been trying to stop me from coming to every show,” Minaj wrote.
“They took my bags before I could see them. Put it on the plane. Now saying they’re waiting on customs. This is what it looks like when ppl are paid big money to try to sabotage a tour after all else failed. Everything they’ve done is illegal.”
The drug possession allegations
The arrest stemmed from an incident at the airport where authorities claimed they found suspicious items in Minaj’s luggage.
In a subsequent Instagram post, Minaj provided more details, alleging that the authorities found pre-rolled marijuana joints in her bags.
“Now they said they found weed and that another group of ppl have to come here to weigh the pre-rolls,” she wrote.
Minaj maintained that the pre-rolls belonged to her security team and were not her personal items. “Keep in mind they took my bags without consent… My security has already advised them those pre-rolls belong to him.”
Despite these clarifications, Minaj faced significant delays and disruptions to her travel plans.
She was on her way to the United Kingdom, where she was scheduled to perform at Manchester’s Co-Op Live as part of her Pink Friday 2 Tour.
Due to the arrest and subsequent delays, Minaj had to postpone her Manchester show.
Amsterdam’s laws on marijuana possession at airports
While Amsterdam is famous for its relaxed marijuana laws, these do not extend to its airports. Marijuana possession is still subject to strict regulations when travelling.
The Netherlands allows limited marijuana possession and consumption in designated areas, such as coffee shops, but carrying marijuana through airports is illegal and subject to fines or arrest.
Travellers caught with marijuana at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport can face significant legal repercussions.
Possession of small quantities might result in confiscation and fines, but larger amounts or suspicion of trafficking can lead to more severe penalties, including arrest and prosecution.
In Minaj’s case, the authorities reportedly weighed the marijuana found in her possession to determine the severity of the offence.
Though she was released, Minaj indicated she might still face a fine for the incident.
