WATCH: King Misuzulu KaZwelithini addresses poisoning rumours
In a video released on Monday evening, the king reassured his people that he is in good health and denied the existence of any poisoning incident.
The controversy surrounding the king’s health began when his traditional prime minister, Chief Mangosuthu Buthelezi, stated that the king had sought medical treatment in neighbouring Eswatini.
The visit followed the sudden death of one of the king’s senior advisers, prompting suspicions of poisoning.
However, the king’s spokesperson, Prince Africa Zulu, dismissed these claims, asserting that they were part of a fabricated narrative intended to defame and spread baseless allegations about the monarch’s well-being.
This dispute not only highlights a growing rift between King Misuzulu and Chief Buthelezi but also reflects the intricate power struggles within the Zulu royal family.
The king, appearing in the video in good spirits, explained that his trip to Eswatini was for a routine medical check-up.
He urged the Zulu people and the royal family not to be swayed by unfounded rumours and to exercise caution in believing everything they hear.

Inside the ruthless war for power in the Zulu kingdom
While the Zulu king’s role is primarily ceremonial and lacks formal political power, he wields significant influence and commands a substantial annual budget funded by the government.
Misuzulu’s ascension to the throne last year was met with internal conflicts and palace intrigues, stemming from the unexpected nature of his succession.
His father, King Goodwill Zwelithini, the longest-reigning monarch in Zulu history, passed away during the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2021, followed shortly by the death of his mother, Queen Mantfombi Dlamini-Zulu, who served as the regent.
Reports suggest that tensions between King Misuzulu and Chief Buthelezi intensified due to disagreements over the chairmanship of the Ingonyama Trust Board, responsible for managing vast land holdings controlled by the monarch.
The appointment of Chief Thanduyise Mzimela as chairman faced opposition from Chief Buthelezi, citing concerns about Mzimela’s lack of experience for the role.
As the situation unfolds, the Zulu people remain watchful, hoping for a resolution to the internal strife within the royal family.
