Kaizer Chiefs grabbed all three points in the Soweto derby, thanks to Yusuf Maart’s halfway line belter that has every chance of being crowned the goal of the season.
Watch: Yusuf Maart gifts Kaizer Chiefs Soweto derby win with this belter
As reported by Swisher Foot, AmaKhosi headed into the first crowd-attended Soweto derby since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic with history and form on their side.
Sure, Orlando Pirates carried the momentum from last week’s sensational win against Mamelodi Sundowns to seal a spot in the 2022 MTN8 final, into Saturday’s DStv Premiership fixture.
However, in the last five encounters, not counting Saturday’s match, Chiefs had risen as victors on four occasions.
On Saturday, the cagey affair dragged on for the most part of the game, with each side afforded more than enough opportunities to net a crucial goal.
Chiefs, in the second half, showed a great deal of aggression in the centre of the park, and sure enough, in the 73rd minute, a high press defence paid off when the ball fell on the feet of Maart near the halfway mark.
By then, the Chiefs attacker, still inside his own half, had already peeped Buccaneers’ goalie Siyabonga Mpontshane a fair distance off his line.
Instead of playing the ball to a nearby teammate, Maart went for the spectacular and belted a full-throttle lob that sailed past Mpontshane and into the net, giving Chiefs the all-important goal.
Pirates, completely winded by the sensational effort from Maart, failed to respond and the Soweto derby ended in a loss for the home side.
The victory takes Kaizer Chiefs above Pirates on the Premier Soccer League (PSL) log and onto third place with 21 points.
Here is a look at the sensational belter that, more than likely, may be crowned the goal of the season.
