The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Gauteng has addressed a viral video circulating on social media, shedding light on the incident involving Major General Fred Kekana.
SAPS responds to backlash over Major General Kekana assault video
A video has been circulating on social media, depicting an altercation between two officers and a suspect who appears to resist arrest.
In a statement, police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi clarified that the incident took place on Monday, 4 September 2023, when the District Commissioner of West Rand, Major General Kekana, visited a residence at Extension 10 in Westonaria.
The General, dressed in full uniform, was allegedly denied entry through a makeshift boom gate by an individual claiming to be a “security officer.”
The security officer is reported to have insulted Major General Kekana, leading to a confrontation.
It was later determined that this individual was not a qualified security officer.
The confrontation escalated, resulting in the arrest of two suspects.
Colonel Nevhuhulwi confirmed the suspects have since been charged with attempted robbery, assault, malicious damage to property, and crimen injuria.
The suspects made their first appearance before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 6 September 2023.
The case has been remanded to Friday, 29 September 2023, and both suspects were released on bail, each set at R1 000.
